Next-generation DevOps - An Introduction to Shoreline ----------------------------------- Aceasta prezentare are loc sub auspiciile programului "Do IT together!" ----------------------------------- ABSTRACT ----------------------------------- Operational complexity is growing. Expectations are higher - customers expect the systems they depend upon to be up 24x7. The environments are more complex - there are multiple clouds, on-premises, containers, and managed services, and a much faster change rate. And, we believe existing operational tooling is inadequate - while there are many tools to monitor systems and route tickets, there is essentially nothing that automatically resolves the issues that arise. In this talk, we present a new approach to DevOps, based upon the principles of feedback control and distributed systems. We discuss how one can map DevOps to notions of desired state, observed state, errors, and control actions. We then discuss how to apply these notions to a software system that can monitor systems cost-effectively and take actions quickly and simply using techniques from functional programming, distributed systems, and query optimization. I started my career as one of 25 people working on the Oracle database kernel, followed by three startups in various roles, with one IPO and two acquisitions. I then moved to AWS, where I ran their database and analytics services for 7.5 years. Over that period, we delivered a dozen new services and grew revenue a thousand-fold to several billion USD. I received over 100 patents and the 2019 ACM SIGMOD Systems Award for that work. At the beginning of 2019, I started Shoreline, seeing a significant and growing need to reinvent how DevOps is done. We're in the midst of formulating a software development office in Iasi to help us deliver on our vision. -----------------------------------
