Verginica Barbu Mititelu is a senior researcher in the Natural Language Technology group of the Romanian Academy Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence and representative of the Multiword Expression section in the SIGLEX board.
She performed her Master studies at and received her PhD in Philology in 2010 from the University of Bucharest.
She has constantly been preoccupied with and involved in the development of language resources, especially for Romanian, applying up-to-date annotation schemas and adjusting them to the characteristics of the language under study.
She has also been concerned with standardizing the resources developed, especially using Linked Data principles of representation, and with the registration of their metadata in international data repositories.
Making hay while the sun shines
Call it an expression, a locution, an idiom, a construction, etc., word combinations that show idiosyncrasy at any linguistic level are a pervasive language phenomenon, which has long been coined as a “bottleneck” for Natural Language Processing. The proliferation of large language models in today’s language technology is salutary, though the processing of the above mentioned word combination is not a solved problem yet and tasks such as machine translation are still hindered by their occurrence. In this talk I will present the challenges raised by this phenomenon, some language resources that we have developed for Romanian and that are dedicated to it, all against the background of the effervescent international community preoccupied with its description and treatment in language processing.
